Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in a tense Round of 16 encounter yesterday, setting up a last-eight clash with Venezuela.
The Nigerian youngsters held off a late Mexican fightback to secure their third consecutive victory after recovering from an opening defeat to Poland, keeping their hopes of winning a maiden world title alive.
Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, rewarding Nigeria’s impressive first-half performance with a goal that gave Coach Akeem Busari’s side the advantage at the break.
The Flamingos continued to press after the restart and doubled their lead in the 71st minute through Dunstan, putting Nigeria in a strong position to seal qualification.
Mexico, however, refused to go down without a fight, with Delgado scoring deep into stoppage time to set up a nervy finish. Nigeria held firm in the closing moments to preserve their advantage and book their place in the quarter-finals.
The statistics reflected a competitive encounter, with Nigeria enjoying 54 per cent possession against Mexico’s 46 per cent and registering 16 shots to their opponents’ 11. Both sides recorded five shots on target, while the Flamingos completed 369 passes and made 22 tackles, compared with Mexico’s 320 passes and 16 tackles.
The victory continues Nigeria’s resurgence at the tournament following their 2-0 win over Puerto Rico and 3-1 triumph against defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos will now face Venezuela, who secured their quarter-final berth with a 1-0 victory over Germany, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Nigeria will be seeking to surpass their historic third-place finish at the 2022 edition as they pursue their first-ever title at the competition.
With Mexico now behind them, Busari and his players must turn their attention to another demanding test against Venezuela if their World Cup journey is to continue.
