A new President has been sworn in in Paraguay.
He is Pedro Alliana.
Alliana was sworn in hours after his predecessor, Santiago Pena, was impeached by law makers and placed under house arrest by the country’ s anti- graft commission.
In his inaugural address, Alliana pledged to work for the ordinary people and to chart a new beginning for the country.
He also assured that he would look into the cases of millions of customers of Ueno, the bank whose collapse led to the downfall of his predecessor.
Pena is now under house arrest, and The Blaze reports that the confinement is a prelude to his imminent arraignment on corruption charges.
His impeachment came days after Pena had unsuccessfully tried to douse calls for his ouster from office by publicly apologizing for his role in the collapse of Ueno, a popular online bank with millions of customers.
The bank went under on Tuesday after the country’s Central Bank intervened to unravel hushes of terminal-ill health in the country’ s strategic banking sector.
The intervention exposed the rot in the banking sector, and confirmed fears that Ueno had been underwhelming for long, though information of the rot had been kept away from the public.
Critics, including members of the 3million- strong customers of Ueno, had taken to the street to press for the ousting of Pena whom they finger in the cover up of the rot in the bank.
Millions of the customers of Ueno say they fear that they may have lost all of their savings and retirement benefits to the fraud that led to its collapse.
Pena had apologized for his role in the crash of the bank and tendered his resignation.
However, the critics say the apology and resignation came too little, too late.
