Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, ending his 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a social media post, confirming that he would no longer represent Portugal after the country’s November international fixtures.
Ronaldo’s decision, reported by Sky Sports and Reuters, brings an end to a remarkable international career that began in 2003 when he made his senior debut at the age of 18.
In his farewell message, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner described the decision as an emotional and difficult one, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, family and fans who supported him over the years.
“Portugal will always be in me,” Ronaldo said.
The Al-Nassr forward leaves international football as the highest goalscorer in men’s football history, having scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.
He also holds the record for the most international appearances in men’s football.
During his time with the national team, Ronaldo led Portugal to its first major international title at the 2016 European Championship. He was also part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His departure signals the end of a significant chapter in Portuguese football, with the forward leaving behind records that may prove difficult to surpass.
The announcement follows reports of a disagreement between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the previous international break.
However, the retirement only affects his international career, as the 41-year-old is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
