Tinubu Expects More Opposition Defections to APC

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has emphasized that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of movement and association, allowing politicians to align with any party of their choice.

Speaking on Thursday at the APC National Summit—where the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party endorsed him as the APC’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election—Tinubu expressed confidence that more members of opposition political parties would join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the elections.

“You don’t blame people for abandoning a sinking ship. I expect more to join us—that’s the nature of the game,” he said. “We operate in a constitutional democracy that guarantees freedom of movement and association. Welcome to the progressives.”

On his endorsement, the President said:
“This endorsement—the ‘carry go’ declaration—means I know the road. We will lead you to the promised land. The revival of Nigeria’s economy is underway. Hope stands before you—embrace it.

“You are the leaders and conscience of this country. Nigeria will be industrialized. The next two years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision. To those I haven’t appointed to political positions, be patient—more opportunities are coming.”

National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, officially declared Tinubu the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 elections.

“As the Chairman of the party, and the only recognized platform for fielding candidates, I hereby affirm the endorsement of the President,” Ganduje stated.
