PDP tackles APC over hunger, economic hardship

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party has faulted the All Progressives Congress over attempts to blame the opposition party for the hunger and economic hardship facing Nigerians, urging the ruling party to focus on addressing the country’s challenges.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

Mohammed said the party’s reaction followed comments by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, during a television programme, where he reportedly blamed the PDP for the country’s economic difficulties.

He also cited similar remarks allegedly made by President Bola Tinubu in Kaduna during the flag-off of his 2027 re-election campaign.

The PDP spokesman described the comments as an attempt by the ruling party to deflect criticism and avoid accountability for its handling of the economy.

“The PDP is not responsible for the hunger Nigerians are experiencing today. The APC must own its record, address the nation’s challenges, and deliver on its promises to Nigerians,” he said.

Mohammed urged the APC-led government to provide practical solutions to the challenges confronting citizens rather than engaging in political arguments over the past.

He said Nigerians deserved concrete measures that would improve their living conditions and restore confidence in the economy.

The PDP spokesman challenged the ruling party to explain how it planned to reduce food prices, support farmers and increase local food production.

He also called on the APC to outline its plans for job creation, improved security, the fight against corruption, stable electricity supply, lower transportation costs and the restoration of Nigerians’ purchasing power.

Mohammed maintained that the government must take responsibility for its performance and present a credible plan for economic recovery, food security and improved living standards.

While acknowledging that the Tinubu administration might have recorded some achievements, he rejected the use of the PDP’s 16 years in power as a justification for the current economic challenges.

He said recognition of any genuine government achievement should not be interpreted as an endorsement of all its policies or an acceptance of attempts to blame previous administrations for present-day difficulties.

“After more than 10 years of APC in office, Nigerians deserve answers, not excuses.

“The APC must tell Nigerians what it has achieved, outline the concrete measures it is taking to address the country’s present-day challenges, and demonstrate its commitment to improving the welfare of citizens rather than continually dragging the PDP into its own shortcomings,” he said.

Mohammed argued that although past administrations could provide context for understanding the country’s economic situation, they should not be used to avoid accountability for current policies and outcomes.

He added that every government should be assessed based on its policies, achievements and the living conditions of the people.

“Nigerians remember the standard of living and the security situation under previous PDP administrations.

“Today, citizens are demanding practical solutions, affordable food, economic stability, and improved security, not endless political arguments and blame shifting,” he said.

The PDP spokesman expressed confidence that Nigerians would judge political parties by their records, policies and commitment to public welfare.

He added that the party believed the growing demand for a return to PDP leadership reflected Nigerians’ desire for improved governance, better living conditions and a more secure and prosperous country.
