Gunmen suspected to be assassins unleashed terror in Anambra State on Thursday morning, killing a prominent lawyer, Barr. Ifeanyi Iloakasi, and his client.
The incident occurred shortly after the lawyer concluded a court session at High Court II in Ekwulobia. The victims were ambushed and shot dead near the Nanka/Agulu boundary in Orumba North Local Government Area.
Barr. Iloakasi, who was also the President General of Aguleri community in Anambra East, was attacked while leaving the court premises. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, riding a motorcycle, chased down and killed the lawyer’s client, who attempted to flee the scene.
Sources suggest that the attack may be linked to Iloakasi’s recent legal success, having just secured the release of a client in a high-profile murder case. A viral video from the crime scene shows onlookers gathered around the lawyer’s abandoned red Toyota Camry, while a voice narrates the chilling details of the incident.
According to Anambra Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu led a team to the crime scene and confirmed the killings.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victims were trailed and double-crossed before being attacked. One person survived and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The surviving victim has been debriefed by the police and provided critical information to aid the investigation. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and identified by their families. Police have launched a manhunt for the assailants as investigations continue.
