A fire explosion at a filling station opposite the Nigerian Air Force Base in Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, Rivers State has destroyed properties worth millions of naira including a church building.
The incident, which originated from the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) section of the station, resulted in a massive inferno that affected nearby buildings and vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion triggered panic, with thick smoke engulfing the area and residents fleeing for safety. Viral videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic aftermath, showing flames and distressed onlookers at the scene.
The fire, which quickly spread to nearby properties, destroyed a church and a bar in the vicinity. Several vehicles parked close to the station were also caught in the blaze, compounding the extent of damage caused by the explosion.
It took the swift arrival of fire fighters who managed to bring the fire under control, to prevent it from spreading further. Their timely intervention helped to limit the overall destruction.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the explosion or reported any casualties. Attempts to reach Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Command, for comment were unsuccessful.
