Seventeen individuals, including four suspected internet fraudsters commonly known as “Yahoo Boys,” were arrested on Friday night by police in Bayelsa State over their alleged involvement in the gruesome murder of two graduates from Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma.
The arrest took place along the Tombia-Amasoma road after officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), led by CSP Bishop Elemide, mounted a strategic stop-and-search operation following a police radio alert regarding a violent cult clash in the Gbarantoru axis.
According to police sources, the RRS team intercepted a Suzuki mini bus carrying 13 young men, some with visible bloodstains and machetes smeared with blood. This discovery immediately raised suspicion of their involvement in the earlier killings.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had initially fled the crime scene using two mini buses, but one broke down, prompting them to abandon it and crowd into a single vehicle—eventually leading to their arrest.
Sources within the police force suspect the individuals are members of the feared Vikings cult group, and preliminary findings suggest that the brutal attack was allegedly funded by four Yahoo Boys.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the arrests, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the level of involvement of each suspect.
“The command is thoroughly investigating the case, and justice will be pursued diligently,” Mohammed assured.
