Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended a team of brilliant secondary school students from Delta State who flew Nigeria’s flag high by winning the prestigious World Schools Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar.
The students, representing Nigeria as Team Nigeria, stood out in the global competition by defeating finalists from the State of Chicago, USA, and host nation Qatar. The Delta delegation edged out their competitors with a 2–1 victory in the semifinals and a clean 3–0 sweep in the finals, clinching the championship title with a commanding 5–1 scoreline.
The winning team included Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ikhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).
Governor Oborevwori, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the students’ triumph as a powerful endorsement of Delta’s educational strides and its emergence as a hub for intellectual talent.
“This outstanding achievement is a moment of pride not just for Delta State, but for the entire nation,” the governor said. “I salute these exceptional young minds who have showcased the best of Nigeria’s youth on a world stage.”
He gave special recognition to Ikhamateh Splendour, who earned the award of Overall Best Debater at the championship. Governor Oborevwori hailed her individual excellence as historic and emblematic of the resilience and brilliance Delta youths are known for.
The governor emphasized that the success of the students is a direct result of Delta State’s investments in education under his administration’s MORE Agenda. He urged other young people across Nigeria to be inspired by the achievement and to pursue their goals with dedication and excellence.
