A tragic incident unfolded in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, as the State Fire Service confirmed the recovery of the lifeless body of a 43-year-old man, identified simply as Kazeem, from a well in the Edun area.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the fire service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, the emergency unit received a distress call at approximately 10:29 a.m., alerting them that an individual had fallen into a well at Ile Alapo.
Rescue personnel were swiftly dispatched to the location, and after a coordinated effort, successfully retrieved the body from the depths of the well. Sadly, the victim was already deceased.
Further details from the fire service suggest that the deceased may have been under the influence of a potent psychoactive substance, commonly referred to as “Colo” (Colorado), when he allegedly jumped into the well. The incident reportedly occurred shortly after Kazeem returned from Eid prayers on Friday.
His remains have since been handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the ‘C’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ilorin. Authorities are awaiting formal identification and collection of the body by the victim’s relatives.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed heartfelt condolences and used the opportunity to caution members of the public against drug abuse. He warned that substance misuse continues to pose a significant threat to lives and wellbeing, often resulting in irreversible tragedies such as this.
