The Supreme Court has held off on delivering a verdict in the appeal challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State. A five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba announced on Wednesday that judgment has been reserved and will be delivered on a date to be communicated later.
The appeal was brought before the apex court by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo (SAN), who are seeking to overturn the outcome of the election.
The respondents in the case include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the declared winner of the election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During Wednesday’s proceedings, counsel to the appellants, Ken Mozia (SAN), urged the court to upturn the decision of the Court of Appeal and declare Ighodalo the duly elected governor, having, according to him, secured the majority of lawful votes.
On the other side, lawyers representing INEC, Okpebholo, and the APC opposed the appeal and asked the court to affirm the earlier rulings and dismiss the case.
