The Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has formally announced the transition of its traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty Macaulay Popo Ovbagbedia, JP, Uhurhie-Osadjere II, the Ohworode of Olomu.

The announcement, made on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the royal palace in Ovwor-Olomu, was delivered by the Otota (spokesperson) of the kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), in the presence of senior chiefs and members of the royal family.

As part of the traditional rites, Ema dancers performed ceremonial displays while 21 cannon shots were fired to honor the monarch’s passage to the world beyond—a sacred custom observed by the Olomu people during the passing of a king.
The late Ohworode, who ascended the throne on May 20, 2023, was widely regarded as a symbol of peace and cultural preservation during his time on the throne.
In line with age-long customs, the kingdom has declared a month-long mourning period, beginning from July 12 to August 12, 2025. During this period, all markets in the kingdom will be shut, and no burials or wedding ceremonies will be held. Businesses may operate on a limited basis for essential transactions only.
All Olomu chiefs have also been directed to wear mourning bands on their left arms and are prohibited from wearing the traditional red chieftaincy caps as a mark of respect for the departed monarch.
A five-minute moment of silence followed the announcement as the kingdom begins a period of mourning and remembrance for a king whose legacy will not be forgotten.
