In a stunning display of intellect and eloquence, Nigeria, ably represented by students from Delta State, has emerged victorious at the prestigious World Debate Championship held in Qatar.
The fierce global contest saw finalists from the State of Chicago (USA), the host nation Qatar, and Nigeria vying for the crown. Nigeria’s team, fresh off their victory at the National Debate Championship hosted by the Presidency under the President’s School Debate Nigeria initiative, delivered a performance to remember.
In the semi-final stage, Nigeria edged out host country Qatar with a narrow 2-1 win. The grand finale, however, was a masterclass as the Nigerian team swept past Chicago with a flawless 3-0 scoreline — sealing a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory to lift the trophy.
The delegation was led to Qatar by the Chairman of the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Samuel Marierie, who accompanied the young scholars to represent the nation at the global academic showdown.
Prior to their departure, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori hosted the team at the Government House in Asaba, where he offered his blessings and urged them to make Nigeria proud by returning with the trophy — a charge they have now fulfilled in remarkable fashion.
