Tragedy struck at Kofar Dawanau Quarters in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday morning when a 30-year-old man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, allegedly stabbed his grandparents to death during a quarrel over food.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said it occurred around 9:30 a.m. and was swiftly reported at the Dala Divisional Headquarters.

Preliminary findings revealed that Ibrahim, suspected to have been under the influence of hard drugs, attacked his 75-year-old grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, and 65-year-old grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, with a knife, inflicting multiple injuries on both.
The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital but were confirmed dead on arrival. Their remains were later handed over to the family for burial according to Islamic tradition.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has directed that the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide Section for further investigation, with a promise that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
The incident has once again thrown a spotlight on the growing menace of violent crimes within homes across Kano. Security experts and community stakeholders have consistently attributed such tragedies to rising drug abuse, mental health struggles, and economic hardship that fuel tension in households.
The abuse of illicit substances among young people, in particular, has become a recurring challenge in the state, with civil society groups warning that it remains a major trigger of violence and domestic breakdowns.
