The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned an unprovoked attack on its operatives in Edo State, describing the incident as a brazen act of lawlessness. The officers, members of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), were reportedly attacked by a violent mob in the early hours of Monday, May 20, 2025, while transiting through Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the mob had blocked the road near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis before launching an assault on the officers using stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects. Two policemen sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Despite the life-threatening situation, the officers refrained from using force, a move the police leadership described as “commendable restraint.” The injured operatives are currently receiving medical attention and are reported to be in stable condition.
“The Nigeria Police Force warns against acts of lawlessness and unprovoked aggression against its personnel who are committed to maintaining law and order,” the statement read. Investigations into the incident have commenced, and those found culpable will face legal consequences, the Force assured.
In a separate incident, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a full investigation into a tragic traffic encounter in Oyo State involving police personnel and officials of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA), which led to the death of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade.
The IGP expressed deep sorrow over the loss and confirmed that the officer responsible for the fatal shooting has been taken into custody. He promised a transparent investigation process, assuring the public that justice will be served.
“The IGP expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased young man and reiterated the Force’s commitment to transparency and accountability in handling such matters,” the statement added.
The Police Force urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and to seek redress through peaceful and lawful channels, reaffirming its dedication to protecting lives and property across the country.
