Cardinal Robert Prevost emerges new Pope, adopts Leo XIV

Cardinals have elected Robert Prevost as the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

He succeeds Pope Francis who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.

The newly elected, Chicago-born pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, is the 267th pope of the church.

Addressing the cheering crowd in Italian, the 69-year-old says: “Peace be with all of you.

“Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected. I would like to offer a greeting of peace to reach your families, all of you, wherever you are. May peace be with you.”
