The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Chief Emma Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of Saturday’s Anambra South Senatorial District by-election.

Announcing the result at INEC office in Nnewi North Local Government Headquarters in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Professor Frank Orjiakor, declared that Chief Nwachukwu polled 90,408 votes to defeat other candidates in the election.

Nwachukwu defeated his close rivals, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who gathered 19,812 votes to come second, while Young Progressives Party, YPP, came third with 6,538 votes.
The Senator-elect will replace the late occupant of the seat, late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who had won re-election in 2023 under the platform of Young Progressive Party (YPP) but later joined APC before his death in 2024.
Nwachukwu, a former President General of Ukpor will also become the first person from Nnewi South to occupy the position upon inauguration.
