A Look at the Conversion Process and Cost of CNG in 2025

Date:

By Akpos Oje

As petrol prices soar above ₦1,000 per litre across Nigeria, a growing number of motorists are turning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative. Backed by the Federal Government through the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), CNG is gaining momentum as part of the national strategy to reduce dependence on imported fuel and ease the burden on Nigerian households.

CNG is a cleaner-burning fuel derived from natural gas and compressed for use in specially modified vehicles. Through a bi-fuel system, cars can run on both petrol and CNG, offering drivers flexibility and potential fuel savings. The conversion process involves installing a dedicated kit consisting of gas tanks, regulators, injectors, and dashboard switches.

However, the financial implications of making the switch remain a key concern for many. In 2025, converting a 4-cylinder engine costs approximately ₦1.3 million, while 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder vehicles cost around ₦1.5 million and ₦1.75 million respectively. Although government subsidies reduce this burden for commercial drivers by ₦600,000 to ₦750,000, private car owners still pay between ₦700,000 and ₦900,000 out of pocket.

To begin the conversion, car owners must first ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition. Once confirmed, they can proceed to any FG-approved CNG conversion centre for inspection and installation. Safety testing is mandatory after installation to check for leaks or system faults, and successful conversions must be registered as bi-fuel vehicles with relevant authorities.

Despite the long-term savings, limited infrastructure is another challenge. As of mid-2025, Nigeria has fewer than 20 accredited CNG refuelling stations, concentrated mainly in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, and Kaduna. The government has pledged to expand this number to over 30 before the end of the year to improve access.

Still, many Nigerians are willing to make the initial investment in exchange for more affordable fuel options. With rising energy costs and a growing push for cleaner alternatives, CNG conversion is quickly emerging as a practical choice for both private motorists and transport operators.
